Why Cheap Electric Heaters Cost More in Returns

A buyer in the UK once sent us back a container of 2kW convection panels. Not because they didn't heat. Because the thermostat clicked loud enough to wake people at night. That's the real cost of a cheap electric heater: not the unit price, but the returns, the reviews, and the distributor who won't reorder.

I've been on the line since 2009. I've seen what fails, what gets returned, and what sits in a warehouse for two years. If you're sourcing for Amazon, retail, or private label, here's what actually matters.

The spec sheet doesn't tell you the return rate

Most factory quotes look identical. 2000W, CE, RoHS, thermostat, tip-over switch. The difference is in the parts you can't see from a PDF.

A cheap thermostat costs us about $0.80 less than a good one. It has a wider deadband, so the room swings 3–4°C instead of 1–2°C. It clicks louder. It fails more often. That's the unit that comes back as "not working" after three months.

A cheap heating element might be rated 2000W but actually pull 1850W. That's a 7.5% difference in heat output. The buyer won't measure it. They'll just say it "doesn't heat the room." For an electric heater for large room use, that 150W gap matters more than the $1 you saved.

We've run side-by-side tests. Two 2kW oil-filled radiators, same size, same price point. One with a 0.8mm steel body, one with 1.0mm. The thinner one flexes when hot. After 50 thermal cycles, the paint cracks at the seam. That's a return.

What buyers actually ask for in 2024

I get the same questions from distributors and Amazon sellers. They're not asking about watts anymore. They're asking about running cost and noise.

An energy efficient electric heater isn't about the wattage. It's about how the heat gets into the room. A 1500W infrared heater feels warm in 30 seconds because it heats objects, not air. A 1500W oil-filled radiator takes 15 minutes to feel warm but holds heat after it shuts off. Neither is "better." They're different tools.

For a silent electric heater, convection is your only real option. No fan, no clicking relay if you use a triac. But a triac costs more and needs better heat sinking. Most cheap units use a mechanical relay. That's the click.

For a wifi smart electric heater, the module is the easy part. The hard part is the firmware. We've seen buyers ship 5,000 units with a smart app that drops connection when the router is more than 10 meters away. That's not a heater problem. That's a sourcing problem. Ask for the module brand. Ask for the antenna gain. If the factory can't answer, walk away.

Certifications are not a checkbox

CE is not CE. A self-declaration from a factory that's never had a third-party test is not the same as a test report from TUV or SGS. For electric heater for bathroom IP24, you need the IP test. For UKCA, you need the UK-specific safety requirements. For ERP, you need the energy label. If a factory says "CE and RoHS" but can't show you the test report number, they're guessing.

We keep a file for every model. Test report, certificate, and the actual lab that issued it. If a buyer asks for a copy, we send it. If a factory hesitates, that's your answer.

MOQ is usually 200 pcs for a standard model. For private label electric heater with custom packaging and a custom color, it's 500 pcs. Lead time is 15–45 days depending on whether you need new tooling. If someone promises 10 days for a custom unit, they're either lying or they're shipping you something that's already in stock with a sticker on it.

The honest takeaway

The cheapest electric heater is the one that doesn't come back. A $2 saving on the thermostat can cost you $30 in return shipping, a negative review, and a lost reorder. If you're sourcing from China, ask for the test report, ask for the thermostat brand, and ask what happens after 100 thermal cycles. If the factory can't answer, find one that can. That's not a sales pitch. That's just how you avoid the container I saw come back.
